Brickell is an area in Miami, Florida that is located within the Greater Downtown Miami. Brickell, which is located south of the central business district, is a prominent financial area in Miami and South Florida.
Brickell Avenue was named after Mary Brickell and William Brickell in the mid-19th Century. Brickell became Miami’s “Millionaire’s Row” in the early 20th century. The neighborhood and the avenue were named after Mary Brickell and William Brickell who established the city in mid-century.
In the 1970s, apartments, hotels, and office towers began to replace the homes of the neighborhood. Brickell is the US’s most populous financial district. It is located north of the city. Brickell, Miami’s most populated neighborhood, has a population of 31,000 as of 2010. This neighborhood is seeing rapid growth in its residential population.
Brickell Magazine is a monthly publication which focuses on Brickell, Downtown Miami and its residents. The magazine was published by TAG Media, Inc. in 2008. Jorge Arauz is the editor-in-chief of the magazine.
Brickell is home to many high-rise buildings, including luxury condo and apartment blocks. Brickell Avenue is the main north-south thoroughfare in the area. It also has many popular Miami restaurants, boutiques and entertainment venues. Brickell Key is located just a few hundred yards east of Brickell’s northeastern coast. It is a gated island with high-rise residential towers and hotels. If you are in Miami Shores, it is just due south!
Around 190,000 office workers worked in Downtown as of 2009. Greater Downtown Miami is one of the fastest growing areas in Miami. It has a population of 80,000 people, up from 40,000 in 2000. Brickell is served both by the Miami Metrorail station at Brickell and by the Brickell Loop Metromover which has five stations within the neighborhood. It is located northeast of the Publix Supermarket in Princeton.
Brickell is South Florida’s financial center. It is also the hub of South Florida’s financial services, investment, and banking industries. Brickell, together with Downtown Miami is also home to most of the state’s foreign consulates. These consulates include those of Brazil, Chile and Ecuador as well as the Netherlands, Peru and Switzerland. Brickell also has the highest concentration of foreign consulates within the state.
