The estate covers 444 acres and protects the coastal pine rockland habitat. Charles Deering lived here once upon a time.

The Richmond Cottage is located on the National Register of Historic Places at Cutler. It was once a hotel that operated from 1896-1922. There are also historical buildings dating from 1896-1922.

Charles Deering, a collector of art, amassed with his brother James a large collection works by Old Masters throughout his life. Some of Deering’s paintings are displayed at this location. The estate’s Artist Village has become a cultural landmark, hosting workshops and exhibitions for artists.

From 1922 to 1927 the Deering family lived and raised their family on the farm of 444 acres. Only two structures remain on the property: the Richmond Cottage, a three story wooden cottage built on the site in 1900, and the three-story stone palace. Additional buildings were built on the property as support structures for the estate. The Charles Deering Estate, a private residence, is located in Palmetto Bay’s Cutler neighborhood in Miami.

The grounds boast the largest pristine tropical hardwood hammock on the coast of the United States. The state of Florida bought the estate in 1985 and made it a museum. The estate, in addition to being owned and maintained by Florida, is also managed by Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department. It is just north of Princeton.

Charles Deering died in 1927. The property was then taken over and managed by his family. After the death of his daughter, the property was made available for sale in 1982. Finley Matheson bought the estate in 1984. He sought to make it a state park. In 1985, the state of Florida purchased the site for $22.5million.

The Deering Estate, a historic property, has been on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) since 1979.

After meeting all eligibility criteria, it was inducted into The National Register of Historic Places in 1987. It is also a member station of the Organization of Biological Field Stations, thanks to a collaboration with the Florida International University School of Environment, Arts and Society. They have access to resources that will enable them to be more effective in supporting research, education, outreach, and other essential activities for anyone in Miami Shores and surrounding areas.
